Contact Arrangements In A Time Of Uncertainty

  • Posted

Clients old and new have been in touch in the last couple of weeks to seek guidance and reassurance of their position by law in relation to their living and contact arrangements for their children when separated from the other parent. Whilst each case turns on its individual circumstances we set out below some points of consideration:-

  1. If possible try and work together to agree necessary changes. The Courts remain open but only urgent matters are being prioritised. If you cannot work together to agree a change to arrangements try using a solicitor before applying to Court.
  2. Children will feel the impact of not being able to spend time with the absent parent so make use of Face time, Skype, Zoom, What’s app video calls, on a regular basis. Try and support the children to keep in contact with the absent parent.
  3. If children are able to move safely between homes and Public Health England Guidelines are followed try and agree on matters such as exercise whether it be a bike ride or a walk and the amount of time that is considered suitable for homework, television or games.
  4. Give reassurance to the children that both parents love them and will be there for them in whatever way possible. Your children will be feeling anxious and whatever steps can be taken to minimise parental conflict will inevitably be in their best interests.

We acknowledge that for many parents communication is difficult, impossible or inappropriate. If communication cannot take place then it may not be realistic for arrangements to be agreed in which case we are happy to consider with you an urgent telephone or webcam meeting to discuss the options.
