Failing to Report an Accident

Leicester University’s Criminology Department found more than 17,000 cases in 2015 involved a hit and run driver. So what do you have to do when you are involved in a road traffic collision?

The Law states that when drivers are involved in an accident you must stop when; an injury has been caused to someone or when damage has been caused to another vehicle or property. You must stop and exchange details with the driver, if you do not exchange details with the owner of the vehicle, you must report the incident to the police within 24 hours. Failing to do so could result in a criminal conviction.

If you fail to stop or report a road traffic accident, you could be charged with an offence and appear before the Court. The offence carries a maximum sentence of six months imprisonment. The offence also carries a penalty of 5-10 points and the Court may disqualify you from driving.
