Is sending one text or message from your phone worth your licence?

  • Posted

It is illegal to use your phone while driving on the roads in the UK. This applies to anything a driver does with the phone; including making a call, sending a message or changing music.

Despite the illegality of using a phone behind the wheel of your car, thousands of motorists still flout the rules.

In 2017, the law became stricter doubling the punishment you can receive for an offence of using a mobile phone whilst at the wheel.  This meant  that the penalty points you can receive for an offence increased  to six and the amount you can be fined doubled.

Drivers can also face stricter punishments which can  include an instant driving ban or a maximum fine of £1,000 (£2,500 if you’re driving a lorry or bus).

If you’re a new driver, who has only had a licence for two years or less, six penalty points is enough to face an immediate driving ban.

The phone driving laws also apply when you are queueing in traffic, stopped at traffic lights and supervising a learner.
