Proposed Changes in Animal Cruelty Sentencing

  • Posted

Under government plans announced recently those who commit the most heinous animal cruelty offences could face up to 5 years in prison; a tenfold increase on the current maximum sentence of 6 months.

This move comes following campaigning from animal welfare groups and recognition that the Courts want to hand down tougher custodial sentences in the most serious of cases.

Whilst the maximum custodial sentence to be passed is due to increase the Courts are set to retain the ability to hand out unlimited fines and ban offenders from owning animals in the future.
