Divorce Day 2026

Divorce Day is upon us once again. This is the day when family law teams around the UK receive their highest amount of calls, and usually falls on the first working Monday of each year. For 2026, this is the 5th January.

It is not known why there is such an increase in divorce enquiries in January. However, many suspect that it is due to the stresses of Christmas, which leads people to “keep the peace” over that period. When Christmas passes and the new year begins, many may feel that the new year brings with it a fresh start and a need for closure.

Whatever the reason, it is key to get legal advice in relation to your divorce and in particular, the ramifications of divorce on your finances, wills and children.

At Johnson Astills, we are keen to keep divorces as amicable as possible. This not only means that unnecessary costs are avoided, but also unnecessary time and stress. Court proceedings should be considered as a last resort, and we recommend exploring the other forms of resolution such as mediation, arbitration and solicitor led negotiations, where possible.

We also work with the Alternative Divorce Company, established by Dr Glynis Wright, who previously practised as a solicitor. ADC’s work is centred around reducing the hostilities between divorcing parties to ensure that no one leaves a divorce with bitter feelings, and that both parties can reach an amicable resolution. You can read more about the Alternative Divorce Company here.
