Proposal to lower the drink drive limit

In a bid to tackle reducing fatalities and serious injuries caused by driving offences, the Government proposes to reduce the legal limit for drink driving.

This change would be the first in nearly 60 years, with drivers at risk of being over the legal limit after a single pint of beer or a glass of wine.

What is the current legal limit?

In England, the level of alcohol is as follows;

Micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath – 35

What is the proposed new legal limit?

The proposed new limit is to 22 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath.

Convicted drivers found over the legal limit could be required to fit breathalysers to their vehicles that prevent the ignition from starting if they are over the limit.

The penalties – what are they?

There are strict penalties if you are caught driving over the legal limit.

You could be imprisoned, banned from driving and fined if you are found guilty of drink driving. The biggest impact drivers find is the disqualification that the Court have to imposed for a minimum term of at least 12 months, with the disqualification potentially affecting numerous individuals.
