How long are the Probate Registry taking to issue a Grant of Representation?
HMCTS have recently confirmed that Probate Registry wait times, for straight forward applications, for a Grant of Representation have more than halved.
The average wait time at the end of December 2024 was just over 4 weeks, compared to just over 12 weeks at the end of 2023. Covid had a huge impact on the Probate Registry waiting times for Grants of Representation to be issued, and now that the application process is much more efficient, the waiting times have decreased. One of the biggest impacts to wait times reducing is that the process to apply for a Grant of Representation has moved online, and for many cases, an online application is suitable.
There are some cases where an online application is not suitable, and a paper application is required. The wait time is slightly longer for paper applications but has reduced from taking 22 weeks to approximately 15 weeks.
These reduced wait times for straight forward applications mean that the process of closing and transferring assets is reducing and therefore the administration of estates will hopefully complete in less time.
Wait times for more complex applications take longer than the above mentioned timescales, but after 16 weeks a case handler will provide updates and where possible expedite an application.
