Corporate Social Responsibility
Giving back to our local community is an important part of the work we do here at Johnson Astills. We recognise that supporting and contributing towards local charitable initiatives assists not only our own clients, but also the wider community.
Each year we support local charities financially and by volunteering our time. We are also committed to encouraging and equipping the future generations of legal professionals by attending educational events ranging from primary to higher education and through mentoring schemes where we work closely with local universities.
We also try to ensure that Johnson Astills is environmentally responsible by our commitment to sustainability through initiatives such as the recycling of crisp packets in both offices and our monthly wombling walks local to our office where staff litter pick (or collect litter).
Our Charity of the Year
Johnson Astills are delighted to announce that our charity of the year for 2025/2026 is The Carpenters Arms who are a local addiction rehabilitation charity based in Loughborough and Six Hills.
Some of our work involves representing those involved in the justice system and we see first hand the devastating impact that addiction has on our clients those around them, and our community including the justice system itself. We see a direct correlation between of the lack of appropriate recovery resources and the outcomes for these clients.
Johnson Astills have been able to support The Carpenters Arms by sponsoring the training of 5 support workers in accredited therapeutic training such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and Solutions Based Therapy. This is imperative in supporting front line professionals in attempting to break the cycle for their service users which can be taken forward in their recovery.
Other Charity Initiatives
Each year, we support local children’s charities with our Easter Egg and Selection Box Drives with Wishes for Kids being our chosen charity for 2026. In previous years, we have supported The Zinthiya Trust, Menphys and Leicester Hospital Charity.
For the past three years, we have supported Toys on the Table, providing gifts to ensure that local children do not go without at Christmas. Alongside donations we also volunteer our time by two members of staff attending the charity to assist with wrapping the gifts which these children may not otherwise receive.
In conjunction with the charity Living without Abuse, our Family Team hold a clinic to provide initial legal advice to those who have suffered domestic abuse and sexual violence in terms of their next steps.
Johnson Astills are a longstanding member of the Coercive Police Powers Scrutiny Group which takes place on a bi-monthly basis as part of The Race Equality Centre. During those meetings, members of the group scrutinise Leicestershire Police’s use of force and stop search power including consideration of body worn video footage as part of holding the police to account.
This year, Johnson Astills took on a 13-mile trek in the Peak District to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society raising close to £3400!
Our founding director, Helen Johnson is a trustee of Warning Zone and our connection with WZ goes back more than a decade. This local charity provides essential life skills and safeguarding for children and young people. Every single year 6 child in Leicestershire and Rutland is invited attend WZ’s state of the art facility to ensure they are prepared for the transition to secondary education. The charity also provides outreach support to secondary schools particularly in the area of social media and internet based activities. In addition to Helen attending trustee meetings and working closely with the Chair and CEO, the Johnson Astills team supports Warning Zone by attending their regular fundraising events, including quizzes, wine tasting and their annual Osprey Cruise on the Rutland Belle.
Our director and Head of Care, Emma Stanbanks is a trustee of the Bodie Hodges Foundation, a charity supporting families bereaved of a child.
