Domestic Violence at Crisis Point

Amnesty International have released a report confirming that Domestic Violence has reached epic proportions.

One quarter of British women and one in six British men will be abused by a partner during their lifetime.

2.8% of men (equivalent to 451,000) and 5.8% of women (equivalent to 891,000) experienced non sexual partner abuse in 2015 – 2016.

One quarter of British women will also experience sexual assault or rape, usually by someone known to them.

When surveyed, one in three adults believed it was “okay” to hit a woman in certain circumstances.

The rise in domestic violence is being blamed on a “culture of tolerance”.  There are calls for the police and Governmental to radically improve the way these crimes are investigated and punished.

Research undertaken by Refuge and Avon revealed it is not only older people experiencing domestic violence, but more than half of 16 – 21 year olds reported they had experienced some form of abuse.  56% of 16 – 21 revealed they had been subjected to coercive and controlling behaviour from their partners.

Of the incidents of domestic violence reported to the police, less than three out of 10 result in conviction and only 25% are recorded.  There is much concern that domestic violence is not treated seriously enough.

In 2015/2016, 77 women were killed by their partner or ex-partner (83 in 2014), compared to 28 men (19 men in 2014/2015).
