Domestic Violence at Crisis Point

  • Posted

Amnesty International have released a report confirming that Domestic Violence has reached epic proportions.

If you, or anyone you know, is being subjected to Domestic Violence and Abuse, please contact the Domestic Violence and Abuse Department (DVAD) at Emery Johnson Astills for urgent advice and assistance, including what legal remedies may be available to you.  The DVAD is also able to provide advice as to whether you may qualify for Legal Aid in relation to your matter.

One quarter of British women and one in six British men will be abused by a partner during their lifetime.

2.8% of men (equivalent to 451,000) and 5.8% of women (equivalent to 891,000) experienced non sexual partner abuse in 2015 – 2016.

One quarter of British women will also experience sexual assault or rape, usually by someone known to them.

When surveyed, one in three adults believed it was “okay” to hit a woman in certain circumstances.

The rise in domestic violence is being blamed on a “culture of tolerance”.  There are calls for the police and Governmental to radically improve the way these crimes are investigated and punished.

Research undertaken by Refuge and Avon revealed it is not only older people experiencing domestic violence, but more than half of 16 – 21 year olds reported they had experienced some form of abuse.  56% of 16 – 21 revealed they had been subjected to coercive and controlling behaviour from their partners.

Of the incidents of domestic violence reported to the police, less than three out of 10 result in conviction and only 25% are recorded.  There is much concern that domestic violence is not treated seriously enough.

In 2015/2016, 77 women were killed by their partner or ex-partner (83 in 2014), compared to 28 men (19 men in 2014/2015).

The DVAD at Emery Johnson Astills can assist you in securing a Non-Molestation Order (Injunction ) against your partner or ex-partner to prevent them from being able to subject you to any further abuse.  A Power of Arrest is automatically attached to the Order by the Court.

In addition, if you have concerns that your partner or ex-partner may attempt to remove your child(ren) from your care, which may put them at risk of harm, advice and assistance can be provided by the DVAD to obtain a Prohibited Steps Order to secure your child(ren) in your care.

If you require advice and assistance to safeguard you or your child(ren), do not hesitate to contact the DVAD at Emery Johnson Astills, either via the website or by telephoning 0116 255 4855.
